Digital Printer Handbook; Adding value with MIS

Added by Sharon Mordey on April, 18, 2011

Next year sees the 30th anniversary of one of the UK’s most well established Management Information System (MIS) companies, Optimus. Originally known for providing practical software solutions for primarily litho printers, the march of digital technology has, to quote Nicola Bisset, Group managing director ‘dramatically shifted how Optimus software needs to behave, in order to keep pace with the instant demands of digital print production.’

Ms Bisset said, ‘The digital print industry knows that shorter runs, personalisation and the expectation that products will be delivered in hours not days, is here to stay. However, our belief is that many talented, innovative and creative digital print companies still don’t know exactly how much money they are making, and that MIS is for digital, must be for digital. If our MIS for this sector, Optimus dash, is used well, it can make a truly dramatic difference to increase the visibility of bottom line performance and profitability!’

Optimus has been developing MIS systems for 30 years bringing its renowned and well regarded Optimus2020 to market some years ago, at Ipex 1998. The company works with a wide range of customers from large multi-site organisations to small print companies. It also works in a number of market sectors such as direct mail, packaging, books, sheetfed litho, and web litho, as well as digital, on a worldwide basis. Since its launch, Optimus2020 has been enhanced and developed to remain relevant to the markets it serves and new modules have been added to deliver even greater benefits keeping it at the forefront of the MIS market.

With this depth of MIS knowledge then, the company was quick to realise that with the growth in digital print there was a need for an MIS specifically developed for the requirements of the faster turnaround, ondemand environment enjoyed by this sector, but interestingly ‘digital print’ itself is diverse with a number of different needs depending on what you print and what kind of technology you print on. With this in mind, the company launched Optimus dash at Ipex in 2010. This was created to work in any digital production field across any process and any substrate. In line with the digital print environment, dash, as its name suggests, is all about speed and efficiency. But, its complexity is contained ‘under the hood’, so all the user experiences is ease of use.

Steve Richardson Sales Director at Optimus said "We welcomed the opportunity to be part of this initiative from Digital Printer to promote awareness that MIS is not just for traditional litho printers. Digital printers and those within any aspect of the digital environment can also experience the automation and essential business analysis provided by Optimus dash. In todays economic climate an MIS is a powerful tool which can and does help businesses to maximise efficiency and minimise costs"
